A timely read following another school shooting in America this is a beautifully written novel. Told from multiple perspectives, including that of the eponymous boy who lies in hospital in a vegetative state following a school shooting, as the story unfurls we begin to hear the true story of why that awful night happened. Each narrator has their own unique voice, they're not always likeable, or easy to empathise with...but they are all human and feel very real. This format of multiple perspectives would make this a great book club read....there's so much to talk about for each character.
The prose is stunning and you really feel part of these characters lives, but I found the pace flagged around the middle third and a little harsher editing could have kept the momentum going to a truly stunning ending.
