Fascinating
A really interesting memoir of the fascinating life of this prolific writer of adventure stories. I enjoyed the stories of growing up on a ranch in Africa and the atmospheric descriptions of the landscapes he loves. There is a welcome honesty and self-knowledge mixed in with anecdotes and affectionate memories.
The other facet which held my attention throughout was the author's perspective on his own development as a writer. Toward the end, his views on the writing process itself gave me food for thought. The author describes himself as a 'gusher'; researching but not planning, then writing from start to finish without any editing.
Wilbur Smith is now 85 so a memoir is timely. Is this the last of his writings? Certainly not! Courtney's War will be published in September 2018.
