I read the second and third book in the series before I read this one, so I was a bit out of sequence!
The series really needs to be read in order, so you can learn about the characters and follow their friendships/relationships develop.
This is the first book set at The Buckingham Hotel in London, we join the cast of characters in 1936 where we meet (amongst others): leading man of The Grand Ballroom - Raymond de Guise, new chamber maid Nancy Nettleton, Vivienne Edgerton (a permanent resident The Buckingham) and, Maynard Charles who keeps things shipshape.
It is evident in reading this book that Anton du Beke has a real passion for the 1930s (I don't blame him), and that passion shines through in the writing and the characters. All in all this is a decent debut, and a great start to a pleasant series. A cosy, comfortable read and a lovely way to spend a few hours.
