A wonderful and compelling romance which transports the reader to Italy with its finely observed descriptions of Rome, where its two protagonists Alf and Letty first meet.

But these are star-crossed lovers and their profound love for each other hits obstacles which seem insurmountable.

I enjoyed Sally Rooney’s Normal People but these characters have more depth and the book itself has so many more layers that I imagine film production companies must be fighting over the movie rights.

Although it’s an entertaining, easy read with laugh out loud moments, references to literature, dance, opera, contemporary culture and Italian food make it a guilt-free pleasure because one actually learns a bit while being compelled by the cleverly constructed plot.

The story also addresses social and emotional issues such as coercive control and mental illness with insightful sensitivity.

The twists and turns of the story make it impossible to put down until you read right to the end and then ... you wish you were still there with the characters.
