Our chemical hearts is the first book that I have read by Krystal Sutherland and I was pleased with the writing and storyline. There is one aspect that allows you to visual certain aspects such as text messages and presentations and it goes so well with the story. The character’s relationships and friendships are very well structured as they bounce off each other.

The main characters of the book are:

🐟 Henry: The main character who had fallen for Grace in a strange but conventional way.
🐟 Grace: The new girl who dresses like a boy and walks with a cain, but caught the eye of Henry Page.
🐟 Murray and Lola: Best friends of Henry. Loyal and give him advice on all things possible.
🐟 Sadie: Henrys older sister and helps with his strange plans.

So this is certainly not a love story of love at first sight.
But it is a love story.
Well.
Kind of.

Henry sees Grace at school for the first time but doesn’t think much of her until they are asked to do the school newspaper, but she says no and walks off. Henry is pissed as he’s been working hard all his school life to be offered the position. The next day Grace decides to become part of the team. Henry it attracted to Grace as she is mysterious and a closed off person and that is what pulls him towards her as she isn’t like the other girls.

After starting the book I realised they are in high school, I was really surprised as I initially thought they was in their thirties (how wrong was I!). But it was a pleasant surprised and both characters (Grace and Henry) started to grow on me and allowed me to she how their relationship progresses.

I just felt drawn to her. Like gravity. I wanted to orbit her, be around her, the way the earth orbits the sun.

After a few weeks, Henry asks if they can both hang out together, they end up going into town to an abandoned tram station. Grace has good days when they talk, laugh and hang out; other days when she dosent talk at all and says where she dosent come in at all.

This is an off the shelf romance and that’s what I like as Henry needs to work for the information about Grace as he is early wanting to know more about Grace Town. I really hope something happened as Henry sound like a nice person that will treat her right. I need to know more about Grace and what’s she gets up to and the change in her image!

And I thought, as a string of misery murmured through my veins, that I’d never seen a human look quite so sad as Grace Town did in that moment.

Grace and Henry go to a party where they have a few drinks and end up kissing. But the next day at school they both act like nothing happened. In the end, he takes Lola’s advice and makes her a presentation to ask her out and tell her how he feels. But it all goes wrong and Grace bolts out the door and he runs after her. She crumples to the floor and tells Henry what happened to her boyfriend and everything then clicks into place for Henry.

This has to be the turning point in the book as you finally get to read what happened to Grace. I loved the parts with the text messages and presentation as they are visuals in the book. I really hope Henry gives it a go and see if they can make each other happy. As some things are worth fighting for!

Draft five.
Because apparently you still have to chase girls who can’t even run.

Grace asks Henry if she can stay the night on Halloween as they are going to a party. They end up getting it on after the party and this is what seals the deal for Henry. They end up spending more time together but they both don’t know where the relationship is going. But Henry is falling hard for Grace and he dosent want to leave that behind.

I feel for Henry as it’s his first love and I don’t think she is that into him as she is driving for the loss of her boyfriend. I really want it to work and they live happily ever after but I really can’t see that happening as Grace is broken and she is finding it hard to adjust to her new life and her new self. But I will have to read on and she if ROMANCE does win in, in the end.

Draft six.
Because your worth nothing less than stardust but all I can give you is dirt.

Henry decides to write Grace a letter a tell her how he is really feeling but when he gives it her she doesn’t want to read it yet. At the weekend its Lola’s birthday and Henry goes to Graces house to pick her up but then he finds out that she is staying with someone else. (won’t go into detail as it will spoil the story). But Henry is left a broken man and over the next couple of weeks he doesn’t see Grace at all. Then one night everyone gets a text to go to Graces birthday party which is a surprise to everyone.

Looks like the romance is out of the question, but I really do feel for Henry as he was falling for her then everything gets taken away from him. But I think he’s better off without her and to stick with his friends. I think something major is going to happen at her birthday party. But I hope and pray that Henry is fine and it has nothing to do with him. Need to carry on reading to see what happens.

But love is scientific man. I mean it’s really just a chemical reaction in the brain. Sometimes that reaction lasts a lifetime repeating itself over and over again. And sometimes it doesn’t. Sometimes it goes supernova and then starts to fade. We’re all just chemical hearts.

Grace goes missing and no one can find her until Henry remembers the old tram station and goes there, low and behold their she is in the water. She tells Henry about Dom and about their relationship. But he still feels hurt and upset about the whole situation. They both decide they should stay away from each other as that’s the best think they could do. Henry is left heartbroken and Sadie tells him that not everything is plain sailing and there will be other girls he likes. So, he pulls himself together and try’s to salvage the newspaper and he gathers friends together to pull it all together and get it finished. After two days, it is finished and sent to the printers. He starts to feel better about Grace and it’s not the first thing me thinks about when he wakes in the morning.

I loved the ending as the author didn’t force them to be together he did what he thought was best for the characters. Although I did really feel for Henry and his broken heart but I am glad he started to pull himself together and end up finishing the newspaper as he had worked so hard to become the editor. Overall the ending wasn’t what I was expecting but I loved it all the same.
