I like the bright blue cover with the house in a bubble, which is in keeping with the story. This is about a Russian author who invites friends to isolate from Covid-19 with him and his wife and adopted daughter on a country estate in America.
He invites three of his long standing best friends, an ex-pupil and an actor he thinks might get him some more television work. The latter turns out not to be a particularly good choice as the story unfolds.
I found the narrative too rambling and repetitive at times and felt I would have enjoyed a condensed version more.
Periodically they go back in time thinking about when their parents came to America from a variety of countries and the prejudice and antagonism they, and their children, experienced.
Their relationships are complex and a bit fluid, you are not sure at times if they actually like each other.
Our Country Friends is the first book I have read by Gary Shteyngart and I don’t think I would seek out another by this author.
