Going into this book I wasn’t sure what to expect at all. At the beginning it seemed very whimsical as well as magical and I wasn’t too sure what was happening, but as we got further into the story I started to grasp at the premise more. The way the story is told is also quite interesting as Piranesi details his daily life through the use of journal entries. We end up finding out more about the house, which is truly a beautiful place. However as we get further into the story it’s hard not to think that there’s more to the house and Piranesi’s life than we initially thought, especially as more clues begin appearing randomly.

It is difficult to pinpoint the exact genre this falls under. I suppose magical realism would fit in certain cases, as well as mystery and historical fiction. The way it is told makes this an easy and enjoyable read, and while the beginning might be slightly confusing, everything becomes clear towards the end. This was such a surprising read for me, and I love the messages that it conveys. However I rather not spoil anything so I encourage to go into the book blind, and enjoy it for the beauty that it is. An easy 5/5 stars for me! I can’t wait to read Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by the same author!
