I enjoyed this retelling of a classic fairytale, particularly as I grew up with the Disney version of these stories which are a little too saccharine for my tastes today. It's about time some of these fairytales were given a feminist touch, with strong female characters taking control of their own destiny.

I particularly liked the development of the protagonist Sophie. She starts out beaten down by the cruel words of her Stepmother, but finds strength within herself when she needs it most. This version of Snow White doesn't need to be saved and she certainly doesn't need a man to do it for her. Well, apart from seven little men who fashion her a clockwork heart, but I don't want to give to much of the plot away.

The chapters were short and punchy giving a great flow to the book. It was a great weekend read and I passed it on to my younger sister who loves YA style fiction and she loved it too.
