It is like the tale of Snow White, with a twist. She is portrayed as strong young woman and fights back. Sophie's appearance is described to be the same as Snow White's but her personality is quite the opposite, which is what leads to a different outcome.
I have always enjoyed reading books based off others but twisted and find this book interesting in the style that it is written. The idea of the book is like many others in this fantasy style genre, but the author, Jennifer Donnelly, has changed the personality of Snow White and turned her into a powerful, independent, woman which immediately draws me in and keeps me reading.
Despite it being set in a magical realm, I find that it can be related back to our society, in the way that people keep girls like Sophie from becoming too strong which is yet another aspect I like about this book. I strongly recommend it.
