I have not read any of the other books by this author, but am familiar with her work. I had high hopes of engagement with the main character but quickly lost any connection.

Personally I found the story melancholy (understandably) but in a dreary kind of repetitive way. It wasn't so much the sadness, more the lack of progress in the story, getting stuck in cycles of behaviour and thoughts that left me disconnected with any of the characters by the half-way point. I could not get alongside Holly, there was not enough depth in her thoughts or interactions with the small group of family and club she is connected to.

I rarely struggle to get half way in a book, I am always disappointed to leave a story in case it picks up, but the style of writing was not for me.
