A Moving Read

This was a very good book, which kept its momentum to the end.

It dealt with some family problems that many of us have to deal with throughout the course of our lives - dementia and other major illnesses, the role of carer, divorce, loss and death. In particular, this book is about a young woman (Leah Parata) who goes missing in her late twenties, never to be found again.

While the plot was fairly predictable, the characters and, in particular, the sense of place were brilliant.

I have never visited New Zealand but rural and small-town life there really came to life. We tend to think of NZ in terms of its cities and tourist attractions but 'Remember Me' really brought home what it might be like to live in a remote place. It had an old-fashioned quality, as though the reader was stepping back in time to the mid-20th century.

The character of the narrator, Emily, was very well drawn. She is honest about not wishing to take on the responsibility of caring for her father, who is suffering from dementia. But she takes on the role with love and care and great bravery.

An excellent read.
