Emily left New Zealand many years ago, now living in England she has little close contact with her family. After being persuaded to return to see her father who has developed dementia things from the past start to rear their head. On arrival Felix gives his daughter an envelope to be opened after his death, from here the mystery continues
Leah Parata disappeared twenty five years ago with not a trace of her seen since. Emily has never been close to her father feeling he has been distant from her and her twin siblings throughout their childhood. Emily has to stay longer with her father, facing problems as her siblings want to place him in a care home.
As the story develops it would seem that Felix, her father once the town GP has started to open up to Emily and there may have been a deeper relationship with Leah than anyone knew. This story of a man struggling with secrets while trying to fight dementia is sensitivity told. The characters have depth and warmth to them. I couldn’t put the book down once started and certainly didn’t expect so many twists. I will look for books by this author as I enjoyed this one so much.
