Emily takes time away from her life in England to come back to New Zealand to look after her father, who is suffering from dementia. Twenty five years before a neighbour, Leah Parata, in her twenties disappeared without trace after buying a bar of chocolate from Emily at the garage where she worked. No sign of Leah has ever been found.
As Emily’s father’s confusion increases, she notices he says things that could relate to Leah and she even discovers a hat similar to one Leah wore when she disappeared.
She cannot understand what is happening and doesn’t want to upset Leah’s family what are their closest neighbours.
This is a well written book but I found the first half a bit slow and perhaps long winded. The characters are believable and not all of them likeable. The plot improves in the second half with a few unexpected surprises. An okay book of this genre.
