That first line really draws the reader in. It's intriguing and mysterious and the reader simply has to read more! Throughout the extract everything was well described, I really felt like I could hear every noise, smell every smell and imagine every location. It looks like the story is to be told from the perspective of multiple women in Laurence's life and I'm intrigued to find out what exactly Laurence has been up to. A very good start.
