This is one of the most overtly racist books I have ever read, most certainly the most racist written in this century. It is sharp and wicked, giving amazing detail of the fairly abhorrent lifestyle of young women living the high life in Singapore clubs and bars. Their declared intent is to find and marry wealthy Ang Moh (white) men. And soon, because they are in their later twenties. They despise Chinese, Malayan and Singaporean men. They despise Chinese girls, are jealous of Japanese girls and fear Ang Moh women.

Jazz and her friends drink expensive drinks, show off their designer (or fake) clothes and dance the night away. They also, somehow, hold down responsible jobs and each lives with her parents. They are each both tough and strangely vulnerable. They have strange friendships with rich men who provide free nights out and it takes a long time for Jazz to begin to question how little real freedom she has left herself.
