What a beautiful debut novel.

Connie's home and family in Coventry has been destroyed by German bombs. She has joined the Women's Timber Corps in Gloucestershire after a failed stint in the Land Army. Seppe is an Italian prisoner of war who is interned in a nearby camp. They both have secrets but become friends because of their skill with trees and wood. The descriptions of nature and settings in this book are exquisite, as are the wonderful characters. The sense of community and the enduring qualities of both the woodlands and the local people who live there during the last year of the Second World War makes reading this book an uplifting experience.

The story is straightforward so the reader can concentrate on the beautifully crafted narrative.

I look forward to reading sarah Franklin's subsequent books as this author has lots of potential.
