I have to be honest, I approach every memoir, biography, autobiography, just any piece of writing that is supposed to be based on life with 50% open mindedness, 50% scepticism, which I like to think is a healthy balance. With that in mind, here are my thoughts on this book:

As far as I can judge (and I claim no qualification to) his is an honest account of a life with the benefit of age to allow enlightened reflections on past events, actions and choices. Michael, the focus of the book, owns up to his mistakes and doesn't try to justify them. His focus seems to be more on explaining and offering hope for others who have experienced any of the things that have affected him in his life. Unsurprisingly, given his life experiences, there was a large account of crime in the book, which made it seem a little endless, but it was also fast paced as he (and his helper writer Harriet) didn't linger over details. It was an interesting read but not my favourite, and while I am unlikely to forget it, I probably wouldn't rush to recommend it to friends and family.
