This was my first C L Taylor novel and it certainly won’t be my last.
“All Anna wants is to be able to sleep. But crushing insomnia, terrifying night terrors and memories of that terrible night are making it impossible. If only she didn’t feel so guilty. To escape her past, Anna takes a job at a hotel on the remote Scottish island of Rum, but when seven guests join her, what started as a retreat from the world turns into a deadly nightmare”
I love all crime novels set in a Scottish location, especially the highland and islands and as this one was set right in the heart of it I found it all the more enjoyable and atmospheric. ‘Sleep’ was so easy to read, I found I read it in more or less a day, it is so entertaining. There’s lots of twists and turns to keep the suspense going and you really don’t know who to trust (or Anna should be trusting) and although you have a fair idea who the culprit is towards the end, it was interesting how the denouement played out in a decently written finale.
Although not by any means the creme de la creme of psychological mysteries that’s around and is probably flawed in more ways than one if I picked over it correctly but I personally had fun reading it and for that alone I give it five stars. I would certainly recommend this book if you’re after a quick, none brain tackling read.
