Many readers have compared this book to ‘Normal People’ by Sally Rooney and there are some similarities. A book of a handful of main characters you get to know really well. The main character of a similar age just starting an English degree at Trinity University.

This book is something different though, time flew as I devoured the chapters, seeing Debbie a farm girl meet Xanthe a good friend she has a difficult relationship with. To follow her story from her caring for her mother with mental illness and her relationship with a special uncle who also has his demons.

It is expected how Debbie will behave but her wild streak comes out, stuck between growing up and not wanting to emulate her mother’s ways. A book where we see her home life and university life simultaneously.

I really didn’t know what to expect from the start of every new chapter but I loved this original story from this debut writer.
