I read Christy's previous book The Beekeeper of Aleppo and was left at the end of it thinking how could she keep this standard up! But let me tell you Christy has. A story of disenfranchised immigrant workers. Exploited for low wages and ignored by a patriarchal society when their rights are infringed.
Nisha has worked for Petra for nine years and she disappears without a word and seemingly leaving no trace. Petra searches for her and when she reports her disappearance to the authorities she is greeted with the answer that she has probably left for a better job. And the statement that is what these people do. But why leave behind her passport and treasured possessions. The agency who furnish employers with workers are more concerned with debts to them. This is the story about the Nisha's disappearance we never hear from Nisha herself. This is a superb tale that will tug at you heartstrings, full of spaces that will make you think about what matters in the human dynamic. A recommended read. Grab a copy!
