This was a beautifully written novel from start to finish. I was enchanted by the storytelling, the author has an excellent way with words and was able to tug at my emotions. This is the first book I've read from this author and I've now decided I will gladly read other works from this author.

The story itself is thought-provoking and tells a tale of race, class, poverty, women's rights, a mothers love, grief for lost loved ones and the underground world of poaching. The author clearly has done a lot of research and wanted to get her findings across.

The author has portrayed her main characters as very likeable, particularly Nisha. This is what makes this novel so emotional, especially when Petra and Yiannis learn more about Nisha's disappearance. Nisha is clearly a beloved maid and has two children that see her as a mother figure. This is why Petra and Yiannis cannot accept her disappearance as running away. I liked all these characters and what they meant to Nisha and in the end what they all did to try and find her.

I found myself reading through this in just two days as the story pulled me in and I had to find out where Nisha was. The authors note at the end proved that this was indeed a well researched piece of work. The author had also taken inspiration from stories of existing maids and an existing news piece. An amazing novel truly deserving of 5 stars. Highly recommended.
