Nisha is a foreign domestic worker employed by Petra to look after her daughter Aliki, Petra is so self absorbed she does truly treat Nisha as a chattel and as if she is totally just a belonging to order around.
Nisha tries hard to be good to them both while trying to keep her love for Yiannis a local board poacher secret and keep in touch with her daughter at home in Sri Lanka.
Then one day inexplicably Nisha goes missing, no word, warning, no personal belongings or precious possessions or clothes taken.
The local police will not listen to either Yiannis or Petra who is now beside herself with worry.
The officials believe that like many domestic workers she has just left her placement to try and find a better situation elsewhere.
But the truth is more sinister than anyone knew and it is upto Yianis and Petra to find out what happened that night she went missing.
This was a fascinating story with a high moral conscience and highlighting the social divide between foreign domestic workers and their employers and the casual disregard of local officials when they are believed missing.
A shocking reflection of our time and attitude this was a novel to really make the reader think of women's plights even today in some countries and our basic human rights to be acknowledged and matter in life.
I will say the amount of graphic animal cruelty was appalling and did highly mar my enjoyment of the book but sadly the occupation of one of the main characters was that of a poacher so it was to be expected.
So full marks on story, marked down on the animal issues.
