I immensely enjoyed reading The Bookkeeper of Aleppo and I found Songbirds just as captivating. The author takes the reader on an emotional journey through the lives of the domestic workers who are invisible, mere shadows and very vulnerable. They have to deal with injustice, abuse and consequently live and work in fear. Domestic workers tend to be the forgotten or overlooked in society but here in this story we are reminded of their value and important contribution.
The author shares their story beautifully and intertwines the beauty of Cyprus, Cypriot life the people and its landscape. The vivid descriptions are a visual delight. The reader can smell the fragrances of the jasmine just like the taste of honey in Beekeeper.
If you are a fan of the original then I recommend you read this book and if you are yet to experience a Christine Lefteri novel then I suggest you buy Songbirds because you will not be disappointed.
