I was a big fan of the author's previous book 'The Beekeeper of Aleppo', so was really excited when I got the opportunity to read this story and I was not at all disappointed!

I learned of two women- one a maid who had experienced several losses in her years and who had made the difficult decision to leave her baby in order to care for another the other side of the world, the second a mother who had lost her husband and was desperate for help bring up her new child.

The two women, although in similar situations, didn't really gel, until it was too late and the maid disappeared.

The author kept me guessing the whole way through the story as to what had happened to Nisha. I had many theories, but the ending was not one of the ones I predicted!

I felt a real empathy for Yiannis, who had been roped into a life he regretted to try to provide for him and Nisha. I felt sorry for Petra for not having the relationship she wanted with Aliki and not knowing how to fix it. I felt so sad for Kumari not knowing where her mother had gone and I felt genuine shock at the ending. I cried twice whilst reading this book and that vey rarely happens!
