The cover made me think of my little daughter's favourite story - The Magic Porridge Pot - and there was indeed an element of uncontrolled growth at one point but the main growth is in our heroine, Lois, as she finds surprising qualities and talents in herself.

It's impossible to categorise this novel! Some science fiction themes (robotics, DNA sequencing, bacterial symbiosis) are interwoven with beautiful chacterisations and warm friendships and topped with a lavish coating of foodie interest and knowhow. With occasional stirring imagery of the San Francisco area, a generous dash of humour and plenty of good-hearted people Sourdough is an intelligent and slightly magical feel-good read for the 21st century.
