I absolutely loved this! I believe this was supposed to be gripping in a suspense filled way, which it absolutely was. I found there was also a hint of comedy in it with Kellen kind of breaking the fourth wall, relieving some of the tension for the reader as well as himself. We are really forced to take this journey of magic and action with him, sympathising with him as he is essentially punished for protecting his friend and trying to prove himself to his peers and his family. Kellen clearly feels as though he has disappointed his family and he is mercilessly teased by his classmates, which is why he puts on a brave face even though he is terrified of letting his father down.
I get the impression that Osia'phest is almost a father figure to Kellen, always making sure he is certain about his choses as though trying to protect him without interfering or crossing a boundary. I think that's what makes this so great, Kellen has a chosen family as opposed to his sister who didn't hesitate to call him out after a victory.
