Just WOW!
Wow is l all I can say about this book! There is so much emotional and vulnerability to it, and I became engaged in the storyline almost immediately. Friedrich wants to please his mother by painting, but a terrible incident leaves him without the ability to see colour. His mother, plagued by darkness, turns to drink, and sees no use in her son anymore. His father is also troubled, and has clearly fallen out of love with his wife.
With Friedrich so alone, it is astonishing that he is still so considerate and kind. It's so humbling, and leaves the reader rooting for a good ending for him.
I'd love to see how this story pans out as I am left with so many questions.
