A relatively short novel but a gripping tale. Despite the harrowing wartime setting the mix of fiction with a real historical character made this book hard to put down. The backdrop of Berlin and the wartime era is evocatively described by the author, as is the love affair between the two main protagonists. A dangerous liaison from the start, the attraction between Kristin (Stella) and Friedrich is intense. As their relationship develops and the horrors of war intensifies, the novel effectively and brutally demonstrates the depths of evil some will stoop to for their own survival, including the ultimate betrayal. I have read many books about WW2 but had not come across Stella Goldschlag and her role with the Gestapo prior to reading about her in this novel. Her actions were absolutely horrendous and hard to comprehend, this book will leave a lasting impression on the reader.
