This books is set mainly in 1942 where Friedrich arrives in Berlin wanting to become an artist and explore the wider world.
At a life drawing class he meets Kristin, and this novel then explores their relationship, naïveté, betrayal and is set with the backdrop of the horrors of war.
I really love this book, I thought it was really well written and kept my attention all the way through.
I especially loved the beginning where it centres around Friedrich’s childhood and the upbringing he goes through. He suffers a lot of trauma and has a difficult relationship with his mother as she struggles with her addition to alcohol. And forces get ideals of a career that she wants for him.
I think this is a beautiful novel and would highly recommend it to those that enjoy historical fiction. I think this is definitely worth a read.
