I held high hopes for this book as I love Berlin and historical novels, however for me this book fell short of my expectations. I do not know why but I found it difficult to read, perhaps it was the style of writing, or possibly because it was originally written in German and translated which left it feeling a bit stinted and disjointed.

The story centres around Frederic who moves to Berlin during the second world war, he meets Stella a model and singer and finds her fascinating. However he is drawn into a darker, seedier world involving spies and an undercurrent of evil involving the Nazi extermination of Jews.

Stella could have been a far more loveable character which would have allowed the reader to sympathise with her more and to understand why she did what she was doing.

Some of the content was difficult to read as it was based around true stories and lives of that time, which would always make it hard to read.
