Although this is a relatively short novel I think that Takis Würger's spare, distinctive writing-style is ideally suited to the story he has told and I think his interweaving of a the experiences of a real-life character added an authentic depth the development of the story. Although I've read a considerable number of books (both fiction and non-fiction) about this shameful period of European history, I nevertheless found this an intensely moving, harrowing and thought-provoking addition to the genre. I appreciated the author's very balanced reflections on the choices which people make and their rationales for them. None of us can be sure how we would react when faced with such difficult choices and I found that this story took me longer to read than, given its length, I had expected it to because I frequently found myself needing to reflect on how I would have reacted.
