I found this an atmospheric and haunting read. I thought the prose the author used perfectly fitted the content and enhanced the story. I was quickly drawn into the Berlin of 1942 and found the relationship between Friedrich and Stella fascinating. The knowledge that one of the characters was based on an an actual historical person added further interest and ensured I remained engaged until the final page. The book examines the great themes of love, loss and betrayal set against a chaotic time in history. It raises questions about identity and self knowledge and although the novel deals with some serious and thought provoking issues it still manages to remain readable and accessible.
I'm glad I read this book and like all good fiction it made me question how I would have reacted under similar circumstances and made me see the world through the eyes of others.
