This book is set in wartime Berlin during the time the Gestapo tightened their grip on society and the what people were allowed to think and do.
In 1942 Friedrich, a naive Swiss want-to-be artist, comes to Berlin to learn his craft. He meets a beautiful life model, Kristin, who introduces him to the underground world of secret Jazz clubs where he falls in love with her. But she has many secrets which put both in unimaginable danger and the situation gets out of their control.

Despite being a translation the prose flows well and so this is a very readable book. The characters are well described and the tension builds as the freedoms of the people are restricted and brutalised. It shows a different side of the war than we normally hear.

I enjoyed this book more than I expected to and can recommend it to other readers.
I was given this book in return for an honest review.
