I am a huge fan of historical fiction, especially fiction set during World War 2 but there was something about this book that I couldn’t warm to. This book is set in Germany in 1942 during the war and follows a young man named Frederick. Frederick moves to Germany from Switzerland and is very green to the world and while he is in a still life drawing class, he falls for the model Kristen. Later we find out that her real name is Stella and that she is of Jewish heritage rather than Aryan. She gets terribly beaten up by Nazi’s as they learn of her identity. I really felt for Stella, she was such a tragic character and we get such a heartbreaking insight into what she felt she had ro do to survive. However, I was not a big fan of Frederick, I found him somewhat bland and I found his romance with Stella to be not very endearing, I just could not really warm to it. Overall I definitely finished this book with mixed feelings.
