This book is about the real life story of Stella goldschlag. It starts with the fictional character Fritz, from Switzerland. He decides to travel to Berlin with the intention of meeting up with his dad in Istanbul later on.
While there, he becomes enchanted by young woman called Kristen, who he later realises is called Stella. He falls head over heels in love with her. She has completely bewitched him with her mysterious, fun loving behaviour. It soon becomes clear that fritz is so enamoured with Stella that it blinds him to the atrocities occurring all around him to the Jewish population. After a few things don't quite add up, he starts to get the feeling that Stella is hiding something terrible from him.

This book was really enjoyable. Fritz is a great character. Very naive and vulnerable in the city on his own. He evolves really nicely in the end to a brave and strong young man. I liked the facts at the start of the chapters, and especially liked the real life court excerpts throughout. It helped build a picture. Stella's secret really just alluded to in the end but the use of these exerts builds a picture and let's you work it out for yourself, making it more shocking.
It's really moving and is just a small snippet of the horrors the Jewish people had to endure under the nazis.
