'Summertime' focuses on the post-war period, demonstrating the difficulty of changing the wartime mind-set and the difficulty of banishing fear, which to a child may have been all they have ever known. The narrator of the novel, a young Jewish girl from Austria, seems to be struggling with this more than most ... or is there more to the story? Is she being paranoid and unable to put the war behind her, or is something darker going on? What or who is at Summertown? Why does she only have one glove? What happened to her family? Does she intend to kill somebody? The text is extremely emotive and insists that the reader sympathise with and root for the young girl from the very beginning.
