The cover seems like your generic epic period historical fiction novel, I am not a fan. I am however a big fan of historical fiction and know looks can be deceiving. The novel starts of quite well, with nice introductions to the places and people we're going to be reading about, but nothing really gripped me until the cliffhanger at the very end of the excerpt.
