So I started this book because I received the second one and I was intrigued to read the first of the series so I had the background going into the second book.
I was pleasantly surprised with just how much I enjoyed it. The historical setting is well researched and well described, I feel I know more about this time period than before I started the book. I, also, enjoyed the fact that it's not a particularly "political" historical book as well. It really focuses on the emotions of the main character and on the mystery they have to solve. As a result, the reader is kept eagerly waiting for the next development in the mystery, rather than getting bogged down by a chapter purely explaining the history or the politics at play.
The characters are well rounded and generally likeable (when they're meant to be). Ned Monkton is a personal favourite of mine. You're made to feel the same emotions as the characters themselves are feeling which I think is a credit to the author.
My only critique is at times the pace gets a little lost in itself and you think that maybe things could move on in the direction of resolution a tiny bit faster.
However, I really enjoyed it and I look forward to reading the second one!
