"The Angel's Mark" is a very descriptive crime novel set in Elizabethan London. It is so easy to picture the misty, murky areas surrounding the River Thames in which the book is set.

An unlikely couple, physician Nicholas Shelby and tavern-keeper Bianca Merton, take it upon themselves to try to solve a spate of murders. The authorities have no interest in the crimes, as the victims are some of the poorest people at the lower end of the social scale.

It took me a while to get into the book, and I felt that it could have done with a little more excitement and tension at times, although the pace did pick up quite a bit towards the end which I really enjoyed. It was also interesting to read about the medical profession in Tudor England too.

On the whole this is an excellent, well-researched debut novel. It would make a great film.
