Well written and atmospheric thriller from a first time author.

Nicholas is a doctor who is scarred by the death of his wife and child during childbirth and who finds himself seeking his own death only to find that he has been saved by an enigmatic woman with her own secrets. Together they embark on a plan to find who is behind a string of murders that the authorities have written off as accidents due to the victims being on the lowest rung of Elizabethan society. This investigation will led to both their lives being placed at risk as they find themselves at the centre of the machinations of the State as it seeks to root out perceived Papal supporters at the heart of the Establishment who are deemed to be traitor and heretics.
This is a well written, well researched book that brings to life this period of Elizabethan England and the conditions of life and society at this time and the fear and uncertainty about religion, society and Royal succession that existed at this time.
