.I. Grace Archer is a woman with a history. As a child she was the only survivor of a notorious child kidnapper and killer. As a policewoman she led the case against a corrupt inspector, and had him jailed. Now she has been transferred to take over his job..... not an easy task, working with colleagues who liked him.
But first day on the job and petty arguments are forgotten as a horrendous case immediately spurs the whole team into action. A new public art installation, 3 huge glass tanks, are found to contain the bodies of 3 homeless men. Not only that, there is the promise of more...
The story is told from Grace and her team's viewpoint, and also from the killer/artist who labels himself @nonymous. We see him stalking people, in real life and also on social media, inventing new personas on dating apps to attract his victims- male and female- and luring them to his kill sites. It's quite shocking how much information is out there on nearly all of us!
This is a very dark thriller, quite gruesome at times. Not for the faint hearted. The sort of thing I love to read, but wouldn't watch as a movie.
The Art of Death is a debut novel, which surprised me, it feels very polished as though written by someone who knows his craft. I hope there will be more, Grace and her sidekick Harry ( DS Quinn) are a good team, and there are many more characters to be further explored, Grace's grandad with his early signs of dementia, transgender Klara the tech wizard, the obnoxious DI Hicks with his personal axe to grind. Bring on book 2.
