I don’t particularly like giving books bad reviews as I know that authors work hard on them but there’s no point in leaving a review if it isn’t truthful so I’ve got to admit that I didn’t really like this book. Actually, where I was forcing myself to finish it, I actually kind of disliked it by the end but I wanted to read the whole thing so that I could give the fairest review possible.

On the positive side of things the dynamics of Robin’s family were very unusual and dysfunctional. Her past, particularly with Melanie, sounded fascinating. There were a lot of intriguing past issues mentioned between various different characters. Unfortunately I ultimately found the past interactions that were mentioned more compelling than many of the present ones.

I think my biggest issue with this story was the amount of dialogue. There seemed to be lots of sections of speech with very little description surrounding it at times. The overuse of the word ‘said’ was somewhat ridiculous at some points, making those sections of dialogue sound almost mechanical. Some of the character’s words themselves felt wrong to me too. And, I have to say, that there were also times when Robin’s thoughts were getting under my skin, particularly concerning Blake and her obsession with him cheating. I can understand why she’d worry to some degree but it seemed to me that he could do nothing right as far as she was concerned; until, after one confrontation, the issue seemed to disappear entirely.

Annoyingly I also don’t think that the killer was portrayed well throughout the story. Their speech and actions didn’t feel right for the type of individual that they were supposed to be. The reason I find this so frustrating is because, if it was handled differently, I think they could have been a very chilling individual and the plot a fairly fascinating one. Instead it just fell flat in my opinion so I’m sorry to say that I wouldn’t really recommend this book.
