Clouds of powerful images and teenage sentiment

The heroine is a young teenager, and living with her beautiful but ineffective mother (no father, he's off on a French island and not coming back) in one of those south coast of England seaside towns that have lost their way. Once very popular with train loads of tourists flocking in every summer in huge waves. Now it is out of fashion and forgotten. It is fringed by the ridge and by forest, so it is inward looking, and the characters have small town attitudes. The bright cover, with the sparkling lights in the sky that feature in the plot, and are relevant to the heroine's psychic powers, show the dark outline of their big house, isolated from the town, facing out to sea, not looking at the real world. All of the images are strong, like the red sand that has blown across from the Sahara, the need to take on "paying guests" as there is no money, bottling fruit to keep them going over the winter, and strong characterisation, make this very readable.
