Natasha Rothweil lives with her mother, who is known for her exceptional beauty and bohemian ways, in a rather dilapidated guest house by the sea which opens to occasional visitors each summer.

The year Natasha reaches the age. of 15, she knows that she is different to most people and can foresee tragedies, especially when she sees lights in the sky, which seem to be a portent of doom.

She has few friends but is close to a boy called Marcus and a strange boy called Lewis who have also seen the lights.

Natasha's mother forms a close bond with her latest lodger, Mr Bowen and they are so wrapped up with themselves, neither have much time for anything or anyone else.

This book is a compelling read. Very few of the characters in it are particularly likeable but it draws you in and makes you feel you are there with them during that long, hot summer.

I don't know why I enjoyed reading this book so much as, excepting the boy Lewis, everyone else seem to have no redeeming qualities, but the atmospheric feel is very involving and even if I didn't like most of those featured in it, I felt sad when it came to an end and left me wanting for more.
