This is a vivid portrayal of what life might be like for refugees from war torn countries. When I started I had no idea what the story would be about, but through a series of flashbacks the history of Nuri & Afra unfolds, the atrocities they faced in ‘everyday life’ what they have experienced and the battle to reach safety. Running alongside is their life in the present and the process of seeking asylum whilst still dealing with the mental scars. A profoundly moving and thought provoking story of humanity.
I listened to the audio version of this book, narrated expertly by Art Malik which was a perfect match of voice to character portrayal. It was a profoundly moving read and one I would totally recommend, despite being quite a slow burn! A beautiful, haunting read which revealed a truth important for everyone to read, particularly in this day and age.
