Never before has a book moved me quite so much as this one has.

I part listened to this on audible and part read it. I fell in love with Nuri and Afra, they were subject to such hardship and loss and yet still remained strong. The way Nuri describes everything to Afra allowed me to feel like I saw what he saw.

The way Lefteri has put this together is so very clever. It flicks between present day and the journey undertaken by the duo, but is done in such a way that it can be confusing to work out what is then and what is now. Much like how Nuri feels with not knowing what is real and what is not.

This story has had such an impact on me as a person. This follows the journey of Syrian refugees seeking asylum and I chose to read it as the Taliban has taken over Afghanistan and we are seeing people fleeing their country to come to England. This story has allowed me to appreciate what the refugees coming here now have gone through in order to get here.

I went through a myriad of emotions whilst reading this, from laughing to sobbing. This will stay with me for a long time. I feel sad because I have finished and I want to hear how Nuri and Afra rebuild their lives in my beautiful Yorkshire.

A five star review from me.
