Although The Cancer Ladies Running Club is a fictional account of the lives of a group of women at different stages in their cancer treatment the author, Josie Lloyd, drew on her own personal experience of being diagnosed with breast cancer and the ensuing treatment. Keira, the central character, has celebrated New Year with her husband, children and friends and thinks she has the ideal life. As well as being happily married and enjoying family life she also has a successful business which she inherited from her father and has expanded since taking over. Keira is called back for further tests after something wasn't quite right when she went for a routine mammogram. In between tests she sits outside on a bench. A woman out running stops for a breather and they speak for a moment or two. When Keira has been confirmed as having cancer she meets the woman again who is also having cancer treatment and she tells Keira about a running group she and some other women undergoing treatment have started and invites Keira to join them. While Keira is coping with the shock of the diagnosis and coming to terms with all the treatment she needs she feels her business partner is behaving oddly and, on top of all her other problems, she now has business worries. This book is both uplifting and very sad. It's also extremely emotional especially for the many women, including myself, who have been in Keira's position.
