The Captive has such an unusual and intriguing premise that I'm keen to read on and find out more! Whoever heard of keeping prisoners locked in a cell in their victim's kitchen?! This is what happens to Jem Dahlin after he murders Hannah's husband, John, who was a detective sergeant with the Metropolitan Police. Hannah is a baker and makes cakes in her kitchen for her north London clientele.

The prisoner is installed in a cell in the area of the house that has the most foot traffic, which seems a bizarre concept! The person can't be hidden away in a spare bedroom or other room. They are just there every time you enter the room and you have to talk to them and feed them! They have to face the consequences of their crime.

The cover is striking and I can't wait to read this book – it sounds fascinating, especially after Jem says he didn't kill John, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary!
