The Captive is based on the idea that we live in a different world, where we have reformed the criminal justice system so that there are no longer any prisons. Instead, if found guilty, a prisoner will be hosted by whomever they have wronged, for the duration of their sentence. Thus Hannah, whose husband was murdered, now has a prison cell installed in her kitchen and is awaiting the arrival of her prisoner - the man convicted of the murder of her husband John. Hannah is nervous about the whole idea of hosting a prisoner, but wanted justice for her husband, so pursued a conviction; she worries about having to interact with him everyday, and what will happen if he escapes from the cell…
It is difficult to write much more about the book without giving away any spoilers, but I can say that most of the book is told from the viewpoint of Hannah, with occasional chapters told from the viewpoints of other characters.
The author writes in the acknowledgements that this is a pretty crazy idea for a novel, and she is right; but I think it works. The book is well written, with plenty of twists and turns.
