Although I only read a 'first look' section of this book through Readers First it gave a good impression of the book as a whole.
The setting is interesting, and other than Queenie I'm not sure that I've read any real diverse teen books before starting to read this one.
It did feel as though some cultural elements (e.g. not calling family members / friends by their real first names) were lost on me, but hopefully the full book would explain this a bit more.
It is clear from this opening that something terrible and traumatic has happened to the main character. He is having to navigate this alongside the normal day to day life of a teenager in school, and I would be intrigued to find out more about what did happen.
